True responsibility goes beyond individual success—it’s about driving meaningful change in society. This team embodies the essence of journalistic responsibility, and for that, they were honored with the BurdaAward.
The more diverse we are, the stronger we become. Different people, different perspectives and unique ideas drive us forward. As Executive Board member Katharina Herrmann puts it: "Diversity is a fundamental pillar of our corporate culture. Yet I believe we often fail to consider its full scope."
But diversity isn't just about people or business—it's also about nature. Biodiversity is the foundation of life on Earth. Without thriving ecosystems, our health, well-being and very existence are at risk. The extent to which we protect them will determine our future. Recognising this urgency, the DLD team brought environmental awareness to the forefront with "DLD Nature"—an initiative that won them the Burda Award in the category "diversity".
For 20 years, DLD has brought together thought leaders, pioneers, scientists, politicians and artists to tackle the most pressing challenges of our time. In 2024, for the first time, the team dedicated an entire conference to a cause that affects us all: protecting our planet. The focus turned to a critical global issue—the loss of biodiversity. Hundreds of animal and plant species are disappearing every day, yet the crisis often goes unnoticed.
With "DLD Nature", the team created a platform dedicated to protecting the environment and promoting a 'nature-positive' future. Over 750 participants and more than 70 experts came together to raise awareness and develop concrete solutions. "Whether through entrepreneurial vision, scientific innovation or political determination, DLD Nature is an inspiring example of what can be achieved in the face of such an urgent crisis," said Katharina Herrmann in her keynote speech.
Diversity isn't just about representation—it's about shining a light on issues that often go unnoticed. This idea is reflected in the projects nominated for this year's BurdaAward, each demonstrating how embracing different perspectives can drive meaningful impact.
Take "BXX - Be Women, Be Healthy", an initiative by BurdaVerlag that tackles a long-ignored topic: the menopause. Despite affecting millions, it remains a taboo subject in many conversations. By encouraging open, honest discussion, the initiative has helped spark a long-overdue public debate, challenging outdated stigmas and pushing for greater awareness.
Diversity is also at the heart of 'The Path to 1 Million Digital Subscriptions', a project run by UK-based Immediate Media. With a broad and inclusive content strategy, Immediate has built a thriving digital subscription business alongside its established print publications. In 2024, digital subscriptions overtook print subscriptions for the first time, bringing the company one step closer to its goal of one million digital subscribers.
Across industries, diversity is more than just a buzzword—it is the foundation of progress. It fuels innovation, drives social change, and shapes a more inclusive and sustainable future for businesses, society, and the planet.
