Burda International CZ acquires digital media company Extra Online Media

Burda International CZ has acquired Extra Online Media (EOM), one of the leading digital media companies in the Czech Republic. With the acquisition, the media company significantly strengthens its position in the online market. Burda International CZ’s current portfolio consists of brands such as Elle, Marianne, Svět ženy and Apetit. EOM’s portfolio includes some of the most popular websites in the Czech Republic, among them eXtra.cz, one of the largest Czech websites, women & lifestyle website Lifee.cz, and Toprecepty.cz, the number one cooking and recipe website in the country.

Burda International CZ is part of BurdaInternational, which bundles the global activities of Germany-based media and tech company Hubert Burda Media with operations in eleven countries. BurdaInternational employs 2,400 people and owns 250 media brands. Hubert Burda Media, a family business with a history of more than 100 years and more than 11,500 employees, combines traditional publishing with digital innovation and invests in digital business models. Burda has been operating in the Czech Republic for 32 years.

As of today, Burda International CZ is the 100% owner of EOM which was previously owned by Pale Fire Capital (75%), a Czech-based private equity fund, and CEO Tomáš Kačena (25%). Kačena will remain CEO of EOM, reporting into Burda International CZ CEO Petra Fundová. Burda International CZ and EOM will continue to function as separate entities.

The parties have agreed not to disclose further financial details of the acquisition.

Burda International CZ is a multimedia company that builds its success in the Czech Republic on renowned national and international media brands such as Elle, Marianne, Burda Style, Svět ženy, Apetit and Chip. The company is a leader in the women’s lifestyle magazine segment. Its titles’ content inspires 1.9 million readers in print and 2.7 million online users. More than 675,000 fans follow Burda International CZ’s brands on social networks, and events by the media company are regularly visited by more than half a million participants. Twice a year, the most anticipated shopping event, Marianne Days, offers more than 600 bargains with discounts of up to 50%. Around 2,300 stores and e-shops throughout the Czech Republic and Slovakia are regularly involved in the shopping event.

Extra Online Media was established in 2013 and has become one of the major players in the online media sector. Its publishing portfolio reaches almost five million unique users per month, which is >50% of the Czech internet population. In addition to the flagship eXtra.cz, it also includes the most visited cooking website in the Czech Republic, Toprecepty.cz, the successful women's website Lifee.cz, as well as the websites G.cz, Extralife.cz and OneTv.cz.
