Burda Style Hands Over 1,256 Self-Sewn Baby Sleeping Bags

None

Last winter, the sewing and handicrafts brand Burda Style joined forces with the Tribute to Bambi Foundation, an initiative of Hubert Burda Media, and Burda's neighbourhood platform Nebenan.de: Burda Style provided free sewing instructions for baby sleeping bags, asking the sewing community to sew sleeping bags to support families in need. In the course of the “mit Liebe genäht” campaign (English: "Sewn With Love"), 1,256 self-sewn sleeping bags were sent it, and passed on to the "Babylotse" project. "Babylotse" is a prevention programme for precautionary child protection and early health support of children, and is financially supported by the Tribute to Bambi Foundation.

"We are absolutely overwhelmed by our reader’s willingness to help. Every single baby sleeping bag sent in is unique and was obviously made with love. The 'sewn with love' campaign has once again shown how we can do good through sewing and handicrafts – and what our sewing community is capable of. The next DIY Christmas campaign is already in the planning!"

Donation of 16,700 € to the Tribute to Bambi-Foundation

In addition to the baby sleeping bags, the Publishing House Aenne Burda is donating €16,700 to the Tribute to Bambi Foundation: as part of the DIY campaign, Burda Style had offered a box for sale containing all the materials needed to sew a baby sleeping bag. The "Sewn With Love" box, limited to 1,000 pieces, sold out in just five days. The Publishing House Aenne Burda doubled the proceeds and donated the final sum to the Tribute to Bambi Foundation, which thus continues to support the work of the "Babylotsen". The donation was possible thanks to the support of partners C. Pauli, Pfaff, Mettler and Schmetz, who provided the boxes for sale on Burdastyle.de.

"Supporting a positive and healthy development of children is a matter close to our hearts with the ‘Babylotse’ programme. With the many beautiful sleeping bags that have been sewn as part of Burda Style's campaign, the ‘Babylotsen’ can now give families in Germany a meaningful gift to ensure a safe baby sleep. This makes the families and us very happy and we would like to thank Burda Style and especially the hard-working seamstresses for their commitment!”

Background

Newborns are particularly exposed to the risk of sudden infant death syndrome in the first four months. Especially when sleeping with a blanket, there is a risk of the babies pulling it over their head or mouth and nose. Experts therefore advise putting children to sleep with a baby sleeping bag instead of a blanket to minimise this risk. Especially parents and families suffering from financial constraints cannot afford everything recommended in the infant first aid kit. In addition, some parents do not feel sufficiently prepared for the birth and the first time together with their babies and are often not aware of such dangers. With the baby sleeping bags the children are safe.
