BurdaPrincipal Investments (BPI), the international growth capital provider of media and technology company Hubert Burda Media, is participating in Aleph Alpha’s Series B financing round.
Podcasts are becoming an increasingly popular medium. At the same time, the demand for well-researched, balanced content is growing in times of change. With its latest investment in Kaleidoscope, Burda is supporting a New York start-up with great potential in the field of audio storytelling. Kaleidoscope specialises in making science and tech topics comprehensible and is primarily aimed at young target groups. Burda's international growth capital arm, Burda Principal Investments (BPI), has now led the young company's Series A financing round, alongside North Base Media.
The global discourse on artificial intelligence, biotechnology and ethics is becoming increasingly complex and politically charged. In this environment, Kaleidoscope combines science, technology and culture in its formats, presenting the topics to high editorial standards in high-quality audio. In this way, the media company reaches a growing audience of culturally engaged, educated listeners, becoming a trusted voice — especially for the younger generation.
"Kaleidoscope is creating a whole new category of podcast. Journalistic principles and ethical standards go hand in hand with the cultural relevance of the content. Today, more and more people are looking for accessible science and technology content. Kaleidoscope has uniquely positioned itself to meet this global demand with its podcasts. In addition, the team uses its world-class production quality to create audio content for other brands."

Kaleidoscope is targeting the younger generation, as podcasts are particularly popular with millennials and Gen Z. Studies show that usage has risen continuously in recent years. According to the ARD/ZDF Media Study 2024 by the German public broadcasting, daily reach and usage time have increased year on year, particularly among younger people. Burda also relies on successful podcast formats, such as "Bunte Menschen – Der Promi Podcast", "Bunte V.I.P.-Gloss", "InStyle GenZ – Come Sit With Us", "Good Food, BBC History" and "BBC Gardeners' World Magazine" from the British media company Immediate.
Kaleidoscope was founded by Emmy Award winner Oz Woloshyn and Mangesh Hattikudur, former Senior Vice President at the American media company iHeartMedia. The company has quickly become the go-to source for engaging journalistic stories about science and technology. Its acclaimed productions include ON Musk, featuring Elon Musk biographer Walter Isaacson, and Afghan Star. Across eight episodes, Oscar- and Emmy-winner John Legend recounts the story behind Afghanistan's inaugural talent show and the cultural revolution it sparked.
With this funding, the company aims to grow further and develop more nuanced and compelling stories about science and technology. In collaboration with major Hollywood studios, Kaleidoscope also plans to adapt existing content for film and television in partnership with major Hollywood studios.
"The team impressed us with their ability to develop podcast formats into influential media brands and expand them to include innovative formats such as live events. We are convinced that Kaleidoscope is building a next-generation media company. With its vision, the startup fits perfectly with our thesis of backing mission-driven teams redefining their industries."
