Vinted Special: Second-Hand Fashion Project

None

Fashion cooperation within the Burda cosmos: Burda's sewing and handicraft brand Burda Style is cooperating with Vinted. The second-hand marketplace is a portfolio company of Burda´s international growth capital investor Burda Principal Investments. From scrunchies and fabric flowers to knitted sleeves on denim jackets, patchwork shirts and two-piece suits made from men's jackets – these and many more items can be found in the free reCREATE supplement from Burda Style (publication date 05.07.2023) and Burda Easy (publication date 12.07.2023). All 16 projects have one thing in common: they help you turn old garments into new favourites.

In this interview, Catharina Hader (Editor Design & Cooperations at Burda Style), who designed all the styles for the Vinted special, reveals some exciting insights into the project.

How did the reCREATE special come about?

A collaboration between Burda Style and Vinted was a no-brainer! A Burda brand that stands for home-made fashion and a second-hand fashion company in which Burda is invested. The reCREATE special allows us to combine these two areas: Simply creating new clothes out of "old" or discarded clothes – or as we say: "recreate". In addition to Vinted, we were able to work with many other partners such as Prym, Consuendi, Bernina, Mettler, Simplicol, Dortex and Eckes, as well as influencers such as TikTok star Paula Unlabled. They were as excited about the idea as we were. As I'm on the Vinted app a lot myself and like to 'reCREATE' garments from time to time, I was enthusiastic about the project from the start. When I was asked internally if I wanted to be in charge of the project, I didn't have to think twice!

Why are you so passionate about second-hand & upcycled clothing?

Especially nowadays, when "fast fashion" has become the norm, clothes are usually not treated with the respect they deserve. But every garment should have a long life cycle. Before you buy something new, look in your own wardrobe to see what else you can find and redesign it so that you can enjoy it and wear it again. And if you don't have anything in your own wardrobe, Vinted has lots of beautiful pieces! By the way, Vinted also recently published a study showing that buying used clothes instead of new ones can save a lot of CO₂e.

How did the project come about and who was involved in the production?

We took our inspiration from the latest catwalk and street style trends and worked closely with our partners to develop the projects. All the clothes in the reCREATE special either came from our own wardrobes, are Burda Style pieces from our fashion vault or were bought by us on Vinted. I sewed or altered most of the garments myself, and some of the projects were also made by my colleagues in the Burda Style team. I was also responsible for the styling and production of the shoot. The whole project was really a great team effort, both internally as well as with all our external partners!

Who are you trying to reach with the reCREATE special?

When we created the reCREATE special, it was very important to us to reach a wide range of people, from beginners to advanced and professional sewers. But we have also included knitting and many creative projects, some of which can even be done with children, such as batik, embroidery, creative eyelet, and pompom projects. They are all designed to encourage creativity. Often just a few small steps are all it takes to turn boring "wardrobe staples" into real eye-catchers! The result is a colourful booklet that will inspire you to get creative – from beginner to professional, from young to old.

What is your personal favourite from the reCREATE collection?

We have been busy planning and coordinating the projects since the beginning of the year. So, plenty of time for my favourites to change! But one of my absolute favourites is the denim shirt. The project is so quick and easy – and everyone has a pair of jeans at home. The denim top is what I would call an absolute fashion piece – a timeless jeans but with an unconventional cut. I wore it at our trend show in April and my colleagues have also been wearing some of the pieces from the magazine (and getting lots of compliments!).

Will there be more issues of the reCREATE special?

We really hope that our readers enjoy the magazine as much as we (the team and our partners) do! We have so many more ideas and hope to be able to implement more reCREATE projects in 2024.
