"Every single one of us has to get engaged - the glass is half full, not half empty." With this call-to-action, DLD’s managing director Steffi Czerny kicked off the DLD All Stars. More than 5,000 participants accepted the invitation to the three-day online festival, which was kicked-off by Steffi Czerny, DLD Chairman Yossi Vardi and publisher Hubert Burda on February 21.
“Covid-19 has opened our eyes to the weak points and blind spots in our health, education and general economic systems. The disease has taught us new respect for what we perceive as normal life with all the freedoms that we take for granted."
Steffi Czerny, DLD CEO
Representatives from business, politics, science and culture will discuss their perspectives on this year's DLD motto "What the World Needs Now…" from Feb. 21-23, 2021. It has been more than a year since the DLD community physically came together for the kick-off event in Munich. Back then, Corona was already a topic in the news, but it was not yet part of our everyday life. In 2021, everything is different – including Burda's DLD innovation conference.
It is international, collaborative and interdisciplinary cooperation from politics, culture, technology, business and the arts that will pave the way to a better future – one that is more optimistic than the current situation. A look back at history proves the power of cooperations of this kind: the interdisciplinary Bauhaus movement revolutionized the world some 100 years ago. Form follows function: It is precisely this basic idea of Bauhaus aesthetics that can be found all over the world today in design, architecture or art. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, opened the DLD All Stars with a speech in which she explained the vision of the so-called "New European Bauhaus Project".
"We need projects that open up a perspective, that make us dream, that touch our emotions and stimulate our creativity. And that is, what the new European Bauhaus is about."
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission
The New European Bauhaus is a creative interdisciplinary initiative designed to create a meeting place where future ways of living are shaped at the intersection of art, culture, social inclusion, science and technology. It brings the Green Deal to the center of our lives and is a call to develop and realize ideas of a sustainable, inclusive, intellectually and emotionally engaging future together.
“We want to create the concept together with all of you. (…) We want to convene people from different backgrounds and professions."
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission
Some people, she said, might wonder why the launch of such a project falls in the midst of a pandemic – but for Ursula von der Leyen, it is an important matter as the European Bauhaus is a project of hope. She said it was important to find ways of living together after the pandemic and at the same time protecting our planet with the issue of sustainability at the heart of it.
Sustainability will continue to be discussed during the DLD All Stars sessions. In addition, speakers such as social media critic Tristan Harris, Biontech founder Ugur Sahin and AI expert Kai-Fu Lee will address questions such as "What does the future of social media look like? How can we prevent the next pandemic? And what role will artificial intelligence play in our future?” You can still register free of charge for the DLD All Stars here.
