Insects, birds and wildflowers used to be a natural part of our natural world. Today, they often disappear silently. The loss of biodiversity affects us all: it is causing entire ecosystems to collapse, jeopardising our food safety and calling our future into question. We must act.
"Biodiversity and species diversity are key foundations for functioning ecosystems - and therefore also for stable supply chains, healthy raw materials and long-term corporate responsibility," explains Christina Frenzel from the Corporate Sustainability Team. "That's why this topic is very important to us as part of our voluntary commitment to regenerative agriculture."
Burda has been working with the agritech company Klim since the beginning of 2024. Klim offers a digital platform that supports farmers in switching to regenerative practices. Klim CEO Robert Gerlach explains what these in turn have to do with the protection of biodiversity and species diversity: “Soil health is an often underestimated key to overcoming two global crises: global warming and the dramatic loss of biodiversity. Regenerative agricultural measures strengthen soil health and enable natural CO₂ storage through soil carbon build-up and ensure active, healthy soil life. Regenerating soils creates resilience - for the climate, for biodiversity and for our food systems.”
Our media brands also send out a strong signal in favour of protecting biodiversity and species diversity. The topic is firmly anchored in BurdaVerlag's Garden & Living titles - print and digital - in particular. Saskia Lurker, Senior Product Manager Garden & Living, explains: "We have been championing the topic with our #beebetter initiative since 2019. With our high in-house reach, we can create a correspondingly high level of awareness among the population."
The topic is also a priority at Focus Online Earth: "Biodiversity and species conservation are not marginal issues, but the foundations of our lives - which is why we regularly address them at Focus Online Earth in order to make connections visible and raise awareness of solutions," explains Linda Hinz, Head of Focus Online Earth. Whether everyday or scientifically based - numerous other Burda brands regularly report on the topic, always with the aim of raising awareness.
With DLD Nature, Burda placed the topic of biodiversity at the centre of an entire conference last year. Experts from science, business, politics and society came together to develop new ideas for dealing with nature and biodiversity in business and society. The key finding: awareness of the importance and urgency of the issue is growing - as is the will to make a difference.
Stopping the loss of biodiversity is one of the greatest challenges of our time. Everyone can make a contribution: through conscious consumption, commitment in the local environment or by sensitising others to the importance of biodiversity.
Burda is also keeping at it: at the Offenburg site, we are setting an example with our own flowering meadow project. It starts today, 22 May, at 12:45 pm on International Day for Biological Diversity. You haven't signed up yet? No problem, just come along, spontaneous helpers are also very welcome!
